Welcome

Founded in 900AD by sheperds from Corleto a neighboring village to the north. A single building was constructed so the herders could spend days with their grazing herds. The original name of Roscigno is Russigno or Russo as it was called. the original family to settle this new village was Rescinito. There are many names associated with this village like de Saiis, Stio, Crisci, Caracciolo, Pecori, Stabile, Mazzie, Villani, and Stio. Roscigno is a small town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy.

Roscigno was rebuilt in 1100, 1700 and 1900 when the old site was abandoned because the inhabitants feared landslides and earthquakes, their fears however were realized many times. Roscigno Vecchia (Old Roscigno) represents today an example of a XIX century rural town developed around a central square and a church not modified by modern architectural or infrastructural changes. The church was built by the monks who lived in the monistary next door and in 1700 when they departed the area the church was given to Roscignio.

The mountain where both Old and New Roscigno were built was inhabited since prehistory as testimonied by several necropolis and archeological sites. The oldest village Monte Pruno was built during the Tuscan era and is an national historical site.

The first mention of Roscigno is in a Corleto documents from 1086, in the XIV century was commune of Carleto, followed by the Caracciolo family in 1543, in 1621 as a Duchy belonged to the Villani family.
